A downloadable game for Windows and macOS

Play the Nightmere demo for free and follow a young Amelia – during and before – the events of the main game. This is the best way for you to know exactly what you’re backing!

NIGHTMERE

Nightmere is a detective-mystery game with psychological horror elements fused into it. You play as Amelia, a burnt-out private investigator who reluctantly takes on a missing-persons case in the small, quiet town of Nightmere – and finds something much darker.

Nightmere is a love letter to all of the mystery novels and games I grew up loving. Many games – all varying in genre –  inspired Nightmere, including Your Turn To Die, Silent Hill, Paper Lily, Undertale, Doki Doki Literature Club, Signalis, Ace Attorney, and OMORI.

Nightmere has long evolved from a small, fun passion project with my friends to a fully-fledged indie game with a grand story, unique characters, and real heart put into it – a game we hope you are able to soon enjoy too!

STORY

The year is 1991. Amelia, a young and burnt-out detective, finds herself in the small, quiet town of Nightmere to investigate the disappearance of an up-and-coming med student: Sarah.

The Client, who is Sarah’s brother, insists on helping Amelia with solving the case. Throughout the game, you’ll play as the bright young PI Amelia.

As you walk around town figuring out clues to where Sarah might be, the story progresses further.

You’ll make many friends – or enemies – along the way; it’s up to you to figure out who is on your side.

But something is watching you.

Very quickly, you’ll realize that there is something dark in the town of Nightmere. Not everything is as it seems. The people all around you are wearing masks. Even you.

What happened to Sarah? What happened in Nightmere?

…And what happened to you?

The longer you stay in Nightmere, the more the town will peel off the mask you wear. There’s something just beyond the mere, hiding in the woods. Something that will shed the truth about the town, and you.

The only question is, at what cost?

Featured here is a 2-hour demo meant to demonstrate mechanics and story found in Nightmere Act I, including a few snippets directly from it. Go play it!

Be not afraid of the truth; fear its consequences.

The town never forgets.

Hey, I am certainly playing the game, and I love it so much!!

However, I did find an error in the code, sadly, that makes continuing impossible, I think. Basically, I'm at this part of the game where Teresa tells me that "Sami is waiting for you in the bathroom; he wants to talk about the broken sink and mirror" and stuff, but when I do go to Sami, he tells me to go back to Teresa. And I think y'all get the idea; it's just a loop, and idk how to fix it.

If anyone could help, that would be great. Thank you!! (DM me on Discord to reply, please, and thank you! user: star.aint_i_great_mimi. Or vincentisgayy if I don't respond on that account.)

(Since im broke I have not unlocked the steam community thingy, made a whole account just for this)

SPOILERS AHEAD(No name mentions though)

Good game, although the game does have a few buggy stuff in it like how the doors sometimes have odd hitboxes, and also idk if it's because its only the demo but a tutorial or a display o fwhat buttons to press is needed. Specifically in that water level puzzle, i had no clue what was going on, i beat in a a few seconds sure but that was just me pressing the up and down arrow keys and hoping  for the best.

The pixel art is okay, the proportions are slightly off with them having big heads yet having smaller bodies, unless this was a stylistic choice then its okay, it didnt really bug me.

Some arguments made no sense? Maybe im the problem but things like them working as a group being a bad thing, with the proof being she works better alone yet we just met her, maybe it was dome to prevent the killer from messing with the evidence. There are many other things but those are just minor things that didnt make sense to me.

The 2-D art is amazing though, I love the art style. Also I can tell this is heavily inspired by Omori, Danganronpa

and Ace attorney. Even in the music. Which also is a part of the game I liked, it fits for the atmosphere and is just nice to listen to in general.  Especially the song that plays when confronting the killer.

The story is interesting, I'm a fan of Omori and Danganronpa so its pretty cool seeing both genres combined into one, was never bored at all playing.

Since its only the demo i can't give a rating but overall its a good game with lots of potential, if mroe improvements are made im sure it'll be a great experience.

And also, that one piece of evidence with the closing times, that was a bit funny how I immediately knew she did it after that, even then i was suspecting her and her partner

made a video about it
the quality of the video kinda sucks but it will better next episode :)

i love it. genuinely im scared for jumpscares in the first place but i forgot its just a mystery game typa thing but i enjoyed it sm aaa cant wait for the full gaem

Loved the game! Has an interessting setting that wants you to continue playing the next releases.

I found out some bugges regarding the menu (that could be changed, the esc is quite uncomfortable), the majority of times you can fix it bug opening the menu again and you control amelia again. One particular case is, when choosing who is the culprit, if you press the menu for somenting (in my case to read the logs) you can't select anything (the names) so you are softlocked.

Nevertheless, I think that this game outshines there (small) coding flaws by having a good story to exlain.

As a last idea, it would be nice having other languages, being a game so reliabled on the text and info that the enviroment offers you, to some pepole that dosen't domain the languaje could be difficult to understand. I know that is difficult to apply but in the long term would be a possitive implementation. (In my case I can offer spanish support, but don't expect something amazing lol)

Good job!

i love this artstyle sm the horror and mystery is really cool one thing i would recommend changing is letting the player hold the arrow keys to move before dialogue ends just for flow i guess. like you can only move by clicking the arrow keys after the dialogue box is closed and i think it would be smoother if you could hold the arrow key before it closed so you could instantly start moving when the dialogue box closed i hope this gets fully funded :)

Heyy! Just played the demo, and I can say this game has potential. I really liked everything in this game especially its artsyle.

If you are planning to release the game on the other languages, I would happily translate to the Turkish. I absolutely believe this game will have its own Turkish community. (You can contact me on discord: ahlaksizkedyyy. )

Well, that's all. I hope you guys release the game without any problems. Best regards.

Heyy Cupkisu! Just played the demo fully and tried to pay attention to everything. First thing i wanna say is this game definitely has a lot of potential and i really like how it exceeded everyone expectations.

IF U WANNA RELEASE IT IN ANY OTHER LANGUAGE: IM ITALIAN, IF U NEED A TRANSLATOR I CAN DO IT FOR FREE ( just for the love of the game, u can reach me on discord: panda_nb)

Possible SPOILERS ahead!!

The game reminded me of Omori, Ao oni, mad father, a lil bit of danganronpa and Ace Attorney (with the whole debate thing). My favorite part is indeed the debates, so i would suggest to focus on the interface and mechanics of those.

Here are some things i noticed that i would change:

- WASD: i would make it possible to move around with wasd keys. Many players are used to that by now so it feels a bit odd moving with the directional keys.

- Z AND X: i would switch Z -> e,  X ->  q (for similar reasons i said above in WASD).

- MAP: i would add a faster button to check maps (TAB or M). THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT IN MY OPINION, because people dont wanna sit through opening the inventory then go to select the map and then forgetting and having to open again to check (i personally struggle with this kind of stuff).

- INVENTORY: i would make so that players can use the mouse to interact with the inventory. It would just result more natural to be able to move the mouse around and click the items.

- CHOICES SELECTION: i would make so that players can use the mouse to interact with the dialogue choices selection (completely optional but would be nice)

- OPTION SECTION: i would add a volume regulator (SFX, BGM, MASTER VOLUME, etc)

Regardless possible bags or overlooked things:

- SOME of the items dont display any dialogue. If your goal was to add a description to anything the player is trying to interact (and i think that is what you are trying to do) then i would recommend a recheck of the items, especially in the pool section, male bathroom and those other rooms around the pool.

- LOADING SAVE SECTION from the menu at the start doesn't allow me to go back to the main menu. So basically once i get in the interface i cant go back i can only choose the savings.

- In the section basically at the start where it asks if u wanna open the door, if u go back out into the corridor and then enter again the room and go to the same door it will display the same dialogue again even tho we already experienced it(?) idk if that is on purpose but it felt odd.

OK THATS IT FOR NOW!! LOVELY GAME AND PLEASE CONSIDER CONTACTING ME FOR ANYTHING!

Hello Cupkisu! We absolutely love your game and its mystery horror RPG vibes. Is there any chance you're considering releasing it in other languages? If so, we'd be thrilled to take part in a Spanish (Spain) localization and would be delighted to send you more information about ourselves through whichever contact method you prefer. Thank you for your time, and congratulations on the demo!

I knew this game was gonna be good, but MAN that was awesome! You guys did a fantastic job and I hope to see this game's full release one day! I made a video on it too!

https://youtu.be/PsgfBnLUkGQ

(WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD)

I don't know what I was expecting from this game, but it definitely exceeded my expectations. I really had fun playing it and it literally got me sitting and analyzing every detail to figure out who the killer was for like solid 10 minutes, not to mention that you got me with that one jumpscare at the end, ain't gonna lie my heart skipped a beat there lol. I look forward to playing the full version one day, even though from what I read it might not be soon. Good luck with the development and when it eventually comes out, I will definitely buy it!

I'm also listing some bugs I encountered so it will be easier for you guys to find and fix them:

1. In the room from which you can leave the client's house when you click not to open the door and then return to the corridor, the door interaction will repeat when you click on the door again after coming back to it, idk if it's a bug or not, but I just thought it would once again ask me if I want to open the door instead of repeating the whole thing.

2. If you don't open the cabinet in the Staff Room before entering the Staff Lounge, you can no longer open it after going back to the Staff Room

3. In the Staff Lounge if you choose not to open the fridge, then after clicking it again it will still make the sound as if you were closing it.

4.  After you unlock the Storage Room and then go to the Changeroom, you still have the option to leave and go to the Storage Room by yourself. In this case after trying to enter the Storage Room, Teresa will still tell you that you need to investigate the Changeroom first, even though she's not present. (Similarly idk if it's a bug, I was just expecting for the game to just tell me that I should check this place later or for Amelia to say that it's not the time for this, since Teresa is now waiting in the Changeroom)

I absolutely loved the trailer and was very excited to play it, unfortunately when I downloaded it, I didn't get a zip file. I've tried running it anyway but it doesn't seem to work very well 😔 ❤️‍🩹 how do I get it to run anyway?

I had so much fun playing the demo! I love how you've integrated all of the games you've been inspired by and not made a complete copy. I can't wait to play the final game :)

This was so fun!!! Game was really cool, my detective senses were at the MAX lol :) I got jumpscared by finding the lifeguard in the locker, gave me a little scare.... 😓😓 ANYWAYS it was a really fun experience overall and im looking forward to more updates 💪💪

This game is absolute cinema ngl. I do wish there was a button during the "clout" part on the game like those court info button on AA. OH and btw please add a tutorial or at least a control guide cus i got so confused lmao T_T. Honestly this game is so peak and the vibes scares the shi outa me, its nice that the gameplay is not too hard but also not too easy! Keep up the good work!:3

Hi ! I was very excited for this Demo, but I can't pay it T-T...When I click "Download" it doesn't download a zip but the full game. I then get a notice saying this file might be corrupting my Computer. But even if I say to run it anyway, nothing happens. Could someone help me out please ? Do I need an app or something ?

I loved this so much and I am excited for further development. Small bug I noticed: After talking with Sami in the restroom of the Women's changeroom, when you leave Teresa will join your party to investigate the lockers. However, if you walk back into the bathroom and exit again, Teresa remains beside you but now a second entity remains of her by the lockers before she had joined your party. Nothing game breaking of course, just something to polish. The whole dream-like sequence in the end with Vanessa, Teresa, and Sami was sooo good and juicy.

Thankssss!!! <3

Hi, I just finished the game and I notice a bug. When I have to choice who te killer I think it is, I pressed esc to see the inventory (idk why I did it) but then when I close the inventory it doesn't let me press the option(?). Idk how to say it because my first lenguaje isn't english, but when you need to select an option there's a white rectangle for you to know which one are you selecting, but the white rectangle wasn't there and it did't let me press anything so I just close the game and started playing since the last time I saved

Absolutely enjoyed the hell out of this game!! Art and especially the music  was incredible! For anyone playing do note that controls are:

Esc for inventory and settings

Z to interact, use items in your inventory on interactables, skip dialogue in arguments instead of pressing x to go to the next one

THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS POST, WHEN YOU VIEW MORE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT SCROLL FURTHER AND INSTEAD REFRESH YOUR PAGE OR CLOSE OUT AND REOPEN THE TAB!!

Really enjoyed being able to interact with all the characters and especially how a lot of things were interactable with notes or comments. Each character I felt was polished and I could understand what kind of character they were.

I thought the game was done because I didn't get the right ending, if you're struggling to get the endings try out some different dialogues in the arguments as well as evidence!! And DO pay attention to those "STOP" moments, they're a step in the right direction! Although i'm still not entirely sure I have all 3 I know I have at least 2!

CLOSE THE BROWSER IF YOU OPENED IT AND HAVEN'T FINISHED OR REFRESH THE PAGES SPOILERS UNDER TAKE CARE!

amelia and the client! I got this one by doing the last argument closing out then pressing new game. All of a sudden seems like we had a big party

Did somebody say Congo Line? This one I continued the run where it fixed vanessa to amelia. However, more of my coworkers started joining me. Looks like its a big party.

Softlocked? I do like how the game makes choices matter but if you get here I suppose there's nothing you can do since you didn't grab the shard from the bathroom.

Thats all! thank you again cupkisu absolutely love the game <3 and if i'm wrong about anything or its already addressed please let me know!!

Here are two more bugs I've found!

Sometimes, in certain rooms, something pulls the pixel sprite downward. I checked my keyboard and I think it’s definitely coming from the game itself. To stop it, you have to interact with an object. (This happened in two rooms: the client’s bedroom right at the beginning and in the locker room, where Sami is, near the showers.)

The second bug is a small detail I discovered by chance: Amelia’s legs go through the bottom of the bathroom door. It’s not a big deal, but the game needs to be as polished as possible, so I thought I’d let you know.

That’s it for now—I’ll let you know about any other bugs I notice as I continue playing.

Omg this was great!! I actually recorded everything... but then realized I just got my facecam and no game footage which is the WORST.

BUT I'm reviewing anyway because honestly it's just that good. I adore the art style, the sprites are really cool, and the story is just getting started. It's got a bit of a Shin Hayarigami vibe to me, which I adore, and it was SO much fun to play and voice!!!!!!

I can't WAIT to see what happens in the full version!!

Only bug I ran into was sometimes when you run into a door and press z to interact it seems to not take for whatever reason so you need to back off and reapproach the door.

Hi, I was really hoping to play your game but it doest open when I clicked it after I installed, there is a gray screen when I try to open and then dissapear and never open the game, can you check that? I really love your content and wanted to play this

The art is incredible! The full CGs I got to see was gorgeous.

The plot was a little confusing to me. The sudden shifts when we abruptly shifted from one character's viewpoint to another's in the woods made me uncertain if we were still in a memory or where we were and the killer having no motive confused me since the the way we searched for clues and put together what happened was very methodical and well done.

The game overall was very enjoyable though! I loved the ending of the demo for it's slow build of anticipation, I was getting steadily more anxious the longer we walked.

i saved my game right before the final argument, and i decided to load the game to replay it. but Sami isn't there every time now. I just think that this is worth reporting.

(1 edit)

I just finished the game, apparently there are different endings but I will just write my review rn and play again later.

Art:

I don't play a lot of pixel art games so I don't have a good way of knowing how the art is in this game. I think it looks really cute tho.

Gameplay:

I haven't played Ace Attorney but I could definitely see the resemblance. I really enjoyed this interactive aspect. Works really well with the fact we're a detective. Also side note, I am not sure if I was supposed to explore more but in the first part of the game. We're introduced to a missing person case but then we move on to the swimming pool with a lifeguard stuck inside? I am not sure if I missed something.

Bugs:

Didn't run into much. The sprites don't show at certain times like in the maintenance(or storage I don't remember) room and the women's changing room. Instead of the sprites, we see a large white rectangle box. This might have been patched up, I saw the game updated right before I continued playing.

Story:

Maybe it's because I chose who I thought was most obviously the culprit but it felt too obvious at times. I am going to see later if the different endings are the different culprits. The change of perspective from Amelia to Vanessa is kind of confusing but you understand after we play as her. The art for the horror parts are nice.

Overall fun experience, making a game takes time and energy and a ton of dedicaton. So much respect to the creator, you completed a demo so it's something to celebrate. Hope you manage to get enough funds on Kickstarter!

I just recently heard about this game yesterday, I guess it looked interesting enough for me to immediately pledge $85 on Kickstarter, I just decided to play it today, I don't really know that much how to download stuff on computers but I luckily managed to download the demo, the only problem is an issue that I had on my Mac, I tried both desktop and through the itch desktop app and kept getting the same issue. When the game opens, the audio can be heard, and when I press the up and down arrow keys I hear a sound that I assume is from the game (I'm not sure what other buttons worked I only tried those 2) but the issue lies in the fact that all I see is it forcing fullscreen but its a completely black screen, the game sounds like it's running fine but I can't see anything. I tried bypassing the gatekeeper, I tried forcing windowed mode, after hearing about it, I think it might be a video rendering error or something but I don't know, I don't even know if the issue is a problem with my computer but I though it would be a good idea to at least let you know. I am really excited to see the further development of this game and hope it has a good future.

(1 edit) (+1)

i really enjoyed playing it!!! got major yttd vibes from this one, and the artwork is better than i expected! :)

(+3)

Hi, I just launched the game (I couldn't do it before because I have an AZERTY keyboard and couldn't find the command to start it) and I noticed a bug—there's some text that keeps appearing that says “Back the Kickstarter.” Maybe it goes away later; I haven't checked yet.

In any case, the game makes me want to play it :) Congratulations on your incredible work, and have a great day!

(P.S.: I created a wiki for the game (link to the wiki: https://nightmere.fandom.com/wiki/NIGHTMERE_Wiki), but I need images without backgrounds, so if you have any, I’d be interested!)

wow can't believe that slipped past, it's fixed now. sorry for the inconvenience! - programmer

This game has a really bright future, the art was interesting the characters all had interesting personalities, the mechanics were fun, the mystery was mind blowing. i wish to see this game succeed in the future.

really good game!!!! i followed u on ig for a long time. i absolutely suck at detective games, but i liked this game so much. MOAR

i just found 2 teresa

great game i've been waiting for the demo and now i cant wait to play the full game.

(+1)

Really great game in terms of the demo, but I would like to see better graphics in the full release. Bugs are obviously going to be an issue so I wont complain about that but other than the graphics and random bugs, this has some serious potential to be an amazing game.

Lovely! Multiple endings, a bit of stress and a whole story to uncover! Can't wait for the whole game

(+1)

thank you so much! please consider helping us fund the full game on our Kickstarter, and im glad you enjoyed it!

(+3)

If you enjoyed the demo, please support the full release by backing us on Kickstarter! We're close to 100 backers!

Alr the game has minor bugs, like frame spikes where it stops for a sec, the poolroom section where you have to move the pipes are overall bug and it doesn't let you exit that action, great game i hope it gets fixed soon

yeah we're on it, the next patch should be soon!

Loved it!

thank you!! please consider backing the full game on our Kickstarter!!

About to do so. Apart from what everyone else has stated (and praised you for!) it'd cool to get a control menu, to know what to press to hide the toolbar and be able to go back during the main menu. But it's a nitpick haha great work!

PEAK 8 HOURS AGO ? AM I LATE

NO NO UR JUST IN TIME LOL

i have extracted the folder how do i open it??

should be an .exe file you can run!
